3D STL allows the creation of consistent and airtight meshes from approximate geometry. 3D STL has been designed to detect and  repair the defaults that you can find in the imported models such as holes, micro-surfaces, etc. It generates a valid airtight mesh with a defined accuracy in reference to the CAD model. This mesh can be used immediately to create a prototype. Of course you can create a parallel mesh thanks to an offset function.
